:: Bravery award winner Dijekshon does M’laya proud ::

Shillong [TST] : Dijekshon Syiem (10) of Tiewsaw village of West Khasi Hills district is among the twenty-one courageous children who will be presented the National Bravery Awards 2009 by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.
The Prime Minister will hand over the awards on January 21, which, incidentally, coincides with the Meghalaya Day.
In all -- 8 girls and 13 boys -- have been selected by a high powered committee in recognition for their outstanding deeds of bravery and meritorious service.
Two Awards will be given posthumously, it was announced on Monday.
The coveted Bharat Award will be given to 13-year-old Gaurav Singh Saini of Haryana who had saved approximately 50-60 people in a stampede at the Naina Devi temple. Karan Nishad of Uttar Pradesh has been selected for the Sanjay Chopra Award. This 11-year-old boy saved five persons from drowning.
The prestigious Geeta Chopra Award will be conferred on 10-year-old Maibam Prity Devi of Manipur who saved several lives when miscreants hurled a grenade inside their shop at Mayang Imphal Bazar.
Ranu Mishra from Uttar Pradesh will receive the Bapu Gaidhani Award posthumously for displaying exemplary courage in saving her brother and his friend from drowning. Ultimately, she sacrificed her life on order to save two other lives.
Vijith V (16 years) of Kerala and Narendrasinh Natvarsinh Solanki (18 years) of Gujarat will also receive the Bapu Gaidhani Awards for their acts of bravery. Vijith saved four children from drowning while Narendrasinh saved his father from the clutches of a crocodile.
Along with courageous acts there are also instances of bold decisions and revolts against prevailing social evils. Three girls from West Bengal -- Rekha Kalindi (11 years), Sunita Mahato (11 years) and Afsana Khatun (12 years) refused to get married at early age and wanted to continue their studies. Ultimately, their parents gave in and the girls were allowed to continue their studies.
The other recipients of the bravery awards are Uddesh R Ramnathkar (Goa), Thoi Thoi Khumanthem, a girl from Manipur, two boys from Mizoram Zonunsanga and Lalrammawia, Sujith R, Sujith Kumar and Amal Antony and Krishnapriya K (all from Kerala), Vaishaliben Sambhubhai Solanki from Gujarat and Yogesh Kumar Jangid from Rajasthan.
The awardees will participate in the 60th Republic Day parade and receive a medal, certificate and cash.
Eligible awardees will be granted financial assistance for their schooling under the sponsorship progra-mme of the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW).
The national awards for bravery was started in 1957 by ICCW to recognise and honour children who have performed outstanding deeds of bravery.
The ICCW confers these bravery awards every year. (With inputs from UNI)
